Eastern Bluebirds begin defining and defending their nesting territories earlier than other species, typically starting in late February through early March. If you're lucky enough to see Bluebirds in your backyard right now, there are simple steps you can take to encourage them to choose your nest box. First, ensure you have a clean nest box. Clear it between broods and after the final one of the season, as Bluebirds typically raise 2-3 broods per year. Second, use a sparrow-resistant box with a slotted entrance to keep out their biggest threat, the House Sparrow. Third, position your box in an open area, mounted on a tall pole with a baffle, at least 100 yards from other boxes.

Bluebirds are also searching for abundant food and fresh water this time of year. Since their primary diet consists of insects and fruit, offering mealworms (which are about 50% protein) is one of the most effective ways to attract them. Pair that with clean, accessible water, and you'll have the perfect setup to welcome these beautiful birds to your backyard!
